Compensation for heating in Lithuania in 2024: what, how and why

According to the data of the Ministry of Social Security and Labour (MSSL), during the last heating season, about 6 percent of all Lithuanian residents received compensation for heating per month on average. This year, despite the fact that the heating season has already begun, there is still an opportunity to take advantage of this support. However, before that, it is useful to know what actions to take, what criteria will be assessed and what amount of compensation for heating you may be granted.

Who can receive compensation for heating?

When deciding whether to provide compensation for heating, income and assets (real estate, movable, financial) are assessed. For several years, due to the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic and inflation, assets were not assessed – but now the usual procedure has returned.

By the way, compensation for heating can be granted for heating a dwelling in any way – either centrally, or with gas, electricity, firewood, etc.

Compensation can also be received by persons renting housing – only in this case, the rental agreement must be registered with the Center of Registers.

The most convenient way to check whether you can receive compensation for heating is to use this calculator from the Social Support Information System. https://www.spis.lt/Skaiciuokles.

What do I need to do to receive compensation?

In order to receive compensation for heating, it is necessary to submit an application and certain documents (personal identification document, income certificate, others – depending on the situation). This can be done both by physically visiting the municipality of your place of residence, and remotely – using the electronic Social Support Information System. www.spis.lt.

How is compensation calculated?

When it comes to heating compensation, the important term VRP is the amount of state-supported income. This year, 1 VRP is equal to 176 Euros.

When calculating compensation, you first need to know what your monthly income is.

If we are talking about a family, 2 x VRP amount is subtracted from the monthly income of all family members, multiplied by the number of family members (2 VRP amounts for each family member).

If we are talking about a person who lives alone, 3 VRP amounts are deducted from his monthly income.

Then 10 percent is calculated from the resulting difference.

The amount that exceeds the aforementioned 10 percent is compensated.

Example: A person lives alone, their monthly disposable income is 700 EUR. The heating bill per month is 70 EUR.

Calculation:

  • 700 – 3 x 176 = 172
  • 172 : 100 x 10 = 17,2
  • 70 – 17,2 = 52,8 Eur (tokia yra galima kompensacija už šildymą)
